Most iconic species of wildlife. Recognized by their brown-black coat and tawny muzzles, black bears are the smallest and most widespread bear on the continent. Their ability to thrive in habitats ranging from the forests of Alaska and Canada to southern bayous and northern Mexico speaks to their remarkable adaptability that has developed for more than a million years.

Weighing up to 700 pounds, adult black bears are excellent climbers and swimmers. Their omnivorous diet includes a variety of plants, fruits, nuts, honey, and carrion, adding to their adaptability in a variety of environments. A robust diet is especially important during summer months as they build vital fat reserves for their winter hibernation. Mother bears give birth to tiny, blind cubs in midwinter dens and raise them with great care.
